Description
The old Kaihiku stone Bridge
Location: near Balclutha, Otago, New Zealand
Mark Phillips Art and Photography
The old Kaihiku bridge is along the east side of the main highway south of Balclutha. I had always thought the area had a calm beauty to it.
I drove around a bend in the main highway heading south. The sunset had illuminated the landscape in a way that was jaw dropping, and I was lucky enough to capture the essence of it.
For me, the old stone bridge is a perpetual reminder of a time less populated. In contrast life was harder then, and travel was difficult. This first bridge is a first step in taming the land, which has now been superseded by a new one. People now just rush by, with only some pausing to notice the history. There are roses growing on the bridge, and now it seems to only be used by sheep.
I have brought out color and depth deliberately, and removed the scar of the roadway that travels up the hill on the right. The composition has been chosen to lead the viewer through to the bridge, to then consider the passage of time on the landscape
